Save The Bronto: UPDATE

by Caroline Riddle on July 24, 2009

A month ago on Brontonation, we told you about the tragic story of the beheading of a Brontosaurus on a local dinosaur trail.  We now have an update on this project with good news.

Through the fundraising efforts of Save the Bronto, the Museum of Life + Science was able to begin “surgery” on the Bronto last week.  Bronto is proud to have helped in these efforts with a challenge grant of $2,000, which was presented to the committee and Museum on Monday, July 20th.  Pictured below are members of the committee, Bronto COO Chaz Felix, and Barry Van Deman the President and CEO of the Museum of Life + Science.

Work on Brontosaurus’ reconstruction began earlier this week, and was led by a seasoned local sculptor, Kenneth “Tripp” Jarvis.

“In repairing the head and neck, first I’ll need to weld a quarter-inch rod to the beam, surround the neck area with hardware cloth, then stucco, lay fiberglass overtop and finally paint the areas that have been repaired,” says Jarvis.  Read more about the sculptor and the repair process on MyNC.com.

A statement from Brontosaurus was issued yesterday:

“Dear friends, I am so excited to tell you I have my head back on and most of the holes in my body are filled. There is still a large hole in my belly but the doctor will fix that when he returns. It has been a sad time for me these past few weeks but I am so happy now that most of my surgery is over. Next I have to get my skin fixed and my body painted.  The t shirts sales have really helped me pay my medical bills.  Thanks to all my friends for buying t shirts and for your donations. Hope you come to visit me soon.”

However, there is still additional fundraising needed.  Donations can be made at Save the Bronto’s website or through the purchase of the very cool “Save the Bronto” tshirts as modeled by the committee in the picture above.  Check back with Brontonation as we’ll report on the progress saving the Bronto!
