Bronto: Named One of the Healthiest Companies in the Triangle

by Caroline Smith on July 22, 2009

healthiest_companyBronto is dedicated to maintaining a healthy atmosphere for our employees.  Recently Bronto Software was named one of the healthiest companies in the Triangle. This is the second year in a row that we’ve been honored, but what makes Bronto a healthy company to work for?

Bronto promotes healthy living both at and outside of work. The highlights include:

  • Bronto branded water bottles for employees (to compliment an endless supply of filtered water)
  • Fresh fruit delivered weekly.
  • Every Bronto has an opportunity for a free membership to the onsite YMCA, if they visit eight times a month.
  • Triathlon coach to provide training and encouragement for employees.

We also encourage all employees to get out and be active during their lunch hour and promote an atmosphere of positive encouragement.  At the YMCA, you can find Brontos pairing up during lunch to take one of the many classes offered such as step aerobics, cycling, x-train, or yoga.  The YMCA also offers bicycle rentals to bike around town or down the American Tobacco Trail.  The trail is also a convenient place for Bronto employees to walk, run, or bike before work, at lunch or after work.  Given the bike friendly nature of our office and surrounding areas, Bronto employees are encouraged to bike to work.  Approximately 10% of the company bikes to work more than two times a week.  Biking to work is made accessible through the availability of bike racks and the on-site YMCA.

In addition to the availability of exercise facilities, Bronto has also provided a triathlon coach who assists any Bronto employee who would like help with encouragement and training. Currently, 8 employees are participating in sprint triathlons this year with the guidance of our triathlon coach.  Over 60% of those participating this year have never participated in a triathlon before, and note that the encouragement of a coach and of peers is one of the main factors for their interest and dedication.

In the Bronto headquarters, the kitchen is stocked with healthy snacks (including fig newtons and trail mix) and a selection of juices and Snapples.  Every Monday a local grocery store delivers fruit which is available for the entire company. Our community committee also organizes many company sponsored events such as the APS walk, MS150 bike ride, and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure which combine our dedication to community service and healthy activities.

Beyond exercise in the gym or triathlons, Bronto holds quarterly events where we play whiffleball, volleyball, or kickball.  As the company grows and evolves, we will continue to research and invest in promoting the wellness and overall health of our employees.  And we won’t sit high on our accolades either, we’ll continue promoting a positive environment for healthy eating and living to work.  Hopefully we’ll see a three-peat of healthiest company honors.

Great job Bronto! How about a Go By Bike contest to see how many car trips can be replaced by bike trips? We’re running one here at Trek with 10 teams of 8 riders competing. I’ll share details if you’re interested.

We’d love to learn more about that. Do we get bonus points for using Trek Bikes? :)
