It is lunch time at Bronto and since it’s such a beautiful summer day, I am headed outside to take in a little of the Bull City. There is so much to do in Downtown Durham; eclectic restaurants, music and arts and a world-class minor league baseball team. But I’m hungry, so lets talk food. Downtown Durham has a wide variety of dining options; Cuban, Brazilian, Mexican, Italian and of course good ‘ole NC BBQ. You can dine on breakfast all day at Elmo’s Diner, grab a huge burrito at Cosmic Cantina or go all out at one of America’s Top 50 restaurants, Magnolia Grill. If you happen to be hungry on a Thursday at the American Tobacco Campus, you’re in luck. You could enjoy an mouthwatering Only Burger as part of Carts in the Park, a confluence of local food and produce vendors. Pick up lunch, fruits and vegetables to take home, and participate in a pick up game of frisbee all within a short walk from Bronto HQ.
In order to work off those calories from lunch a short walk along the American Tobacco Trail is definitely in order. The trail is 22 miles long and runs from Downtown Durham through Wake County and ends in Chatham County. The trail is open to walkers and runners, dogs, bicycles and even horses. There are several Brontos that bike the trail to communte to and from work. If the summer heat gets to you, the Durham YMCA has a location on the American Tobacco Campus and a Downtown Durham location, just a short walk through town – there you can exercise in cool air-conditioning.
The Durham Bulls are next door neighbors to Bronto and day games are a great way to spend the lunch hour – what can beat a hot dog and a few innings of hardball? If it’s a night game – you can always grab a few beers at Tyler’s Taproom after work and hang out until the ball park opens.
Downtown Durham really comes alive in the evenings and on the weekends. During the summer months there are concerts every Friday night at Brightleaf Square and the American Tobacco Campus hosts the “Music on the Lawn” series throughout the summer. Preservation Durham offers walking tours on Saturday mornings. The tours start the Durham Farmers Market, so make sure you take some time to peruse the wares of local farmers and artisans. On the 3rd Friday of every month local artists display their work in the many galleries downtown. The new Durham Performing Arts Center, or DPAC, is a world class venue for Broadway Shows, comedy routines, concerts and my family’s favorite; the Backyardigans!
Working at Bronto offers so many privileges, the least of which is the opportunity to work and play in Durham!

Sounds like an awesome place to work – both the company and the city! Shame I’m all the way in Vermont. Just too far (for now anyhow) to relocate the family!
Viva la Durham!
